Join or Die x Division Road Collaborations

This week, we're proud to unveil our Artisan Series project with Join or Die Handmade Knives, following our ceramics collection with Maja Sandvang. When we first ventured to The Fields four years ago, the vision of creating home and lifestyle pieces inspired by and made from the land was immediate. Since collecting materials, brainstorming, and designing, we've diligently sought out local artisans to collaborate with on these collections. After all the discovery and effort, we're excited to see our ideas materialize into our first knife and tableware collections. Along the way, we discovered Brent Stubblefield and his acclaimed group of craftsmen at Join or Die Handmade Knives. Impressed by his passion, diligence, material sourcing, design, and the purposeful nature of his work, we began discussing collaborations. About a year later, we are pleased to introduce The Fields Artisan Handmade Knives, crafted from an exclusive mix of materials and specifications, utilizing our fallen, milled, and air-dried wood from the land. This collection showcases Virginia crafts via Division Road, featuring a unique blend of heirloom-quality goods that combine utility and style.

Brent Stubblefield, a well-known maker across the country and a contestant on Forged by Fire, is recognized for blending traditional forging with modern machinery, ingenuity, and hand techniques. He creates highly finished, fully functional outdoor knives. Using top-grade Nitro-V stainless steel and in-house forging of full Damascus steel blades, Join or Die knives embody authentic craftsmanship. To keep production streamlined, he and his team carefully develop every step – from curing and stabilizing wood to crafting custom mosaic pins and grommets – and hand-make each sheath. Since durability is the top priority for a knife, their partnership with the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources and active involvement with backcountry groups ensure these knives meet real outdoor demands while maintaining the beauty of a handmade Join or Die piece.

For our first collaboration series, we focused on Join or Die’s classics, adding our Division Road aesthetic that uniquely accentuates the materials and making. The Everyday Carry Fieldmate and Hunting Explorer knives feature fallen, milled, and air-dried White Oak from The Fields, carefully selected for its strong character and given a natural finish. Providing subtle accents and enhancing strength, a black and ecru G-10 liner creates an inlay effect, complemented by custom brass and stainless mosaic pins, and laser-engraved 'Join or Die' and 'Division Road' on the blade faces. The Damascus Steel blades are forged in-house using nickel and High-Carbon Steel in 120 layers, creating a distinctive pattern. Nitro-V Stainless Steel, chosen for its durability, ease of sharpening, and longevity, is used for the Explorer and Steak Knife Set, both of which feature highly polished blades and pebbled faces. The Steak Knife Set combines The Fields’ fallen Red Oak and Sycamore with other reclaimed hardwoods from Virginia, creating a beautiful and functional cutlery set that brings craftsmanship into your daily rituals.

We continue to highlight our best local makers, focusing on bringing high-design, handmade goods into daily life. The Fields Artisan Series aims to elevate our environment and rituals with handcrafted items that strike a balance between refinement and authenticity. We put great effort into sourcing and collaborating on apparel and footwear, ensuring each piece is not only made correctly but also with a love for creating something that holds innate value for its owner. Our location fosters a deeper connection to the natural world and its materials through our life’s work, and these collections of handmade Join or Die knives and Maja Sandvang ceramics are further expressions of The Fields. We look forward to continuing to organically develop this vision, filling homes and days with more authentically made goods rooted in the values and principles we strive to preserve and nurture.
