At the intersection of art and garment, designer Amachi Yoshimoto tells his origin story and philosophy through each collection. Born in a remote artisan community in far northern California, unofficially called Elk Valley and established by Japanese ceramicists in the 60s and 70s, Yoshimoto spent his early childhood immersed in a natural environment without electricity or gas. As he grew, he led a nomadic life, exploring Japan and the world throughout his teens. He encountered various garment trades, gaining experience with fashion brands, textile manufacturers, and patternmakers in Kyoto and Tokyo, and eventually pursued formal fashion education and training in Japan. Established in 2017, amachi. is created seasonally in a forested design studio in the foothills of Nagano Prefecture, surrounded by the nature that inspires the brand. Rooted in traditional Japanese garment-construction techniques and ancient natural-dyeing processes, each piece is a unique wearable work of art. This soulful expression, which connects humanity to nature, presents a future world in directional, functional silhouettes, where we are more attuned to and enveloped by the spirit of the land.
