Using heritage-based materials and techniques in unheard of methods, Nine Lives is “Zen as Fuck.” Bi-centralized in Los Angeles and Tokyo, Nine Lives manages to be East and West but neither. They combine the highest quality patterning, material production and construction available, honoring olden techniques but with a pirate view of theft and appropriation of those elements to create something totally new, unseen, and sometimes obscene. Combining the experience of careers in tattooing, poetry, apparel and garment design, Ian Segal and Kataro Sato reference the rocker Visual Kei of Japan and Mod scene of LA with samurai precision towards garment innovation, leading us to call them the Rock Star Yakuza. To further push the envelope, Masa Takayanagi develops patterns from his experience with renowned designers and exclusive fashion houses, executing to perfection in totally new approaches. Drawing inspiration from western, eastern, military, and musical icons, Nine Lives creates garments that resemble originals but only a little.
